Everyone is oh so lovely.
As if my show opportunities at the Jane Bond weren’t enough for one month, I will also be showing an altogether different series of paintings at jBU starting tonight at the opening of their new Waterloo store. I feel so lucky to have two showings going on down the same street in Waterloo! What a great city full of great people.
I’ll do my best to post images from the opening sooner rather than later.
Vacuity will be playing an acoustic set as well. Similarly, there is rumoured to be sheep at this thing. I love it.
Meet Me (Hello!) An Interview from Pink Elephant Design Blog
Meet Kevin.

PE: Hi, who are you? Name, Age, Employment if any (blame the recession), Claim to Fame.
KS: a) My name is Kevin Suess. Hello!
b) I’m 23 and I’m an illustrator / graphic designer / musician.
c) I make incredible grilled cheese sandwiches.PE: Are you native to this area?
KS: I’ve lived in K-W for 23 years which coincidentally, is my whole life.
PE: What do you do art wise and what are your favourite medias to work in? Creatively.
KS: I suppose I experiment in many styles and themes in art making. I paint and pour and sketch and ink, sometimes overly tidily, sometimes disasterously messily. I use mostly oil, acrylic and charcoal but lately I’ve been considering getting into encaustic and the mess it will most definitely entail.
PE: What are your favourite things in/about KW?
KS: I’m crazy about the Boathouse in Victoria Park. I’ve only played there once but it was amazing. It’s a great venue. Artistically, I like that less established artists and musicians like myself are given chances and opportunities to show their talents. Maybe it’s not the area, i could just be lucky with people I’ve had the opportunity to meet… but local publications and venues in the past have been very kind and welcoming to me.
PE: If you could have one super power, what would it be?
KS: The ability to accurately generate any statistic I could possibly conceive. How many times have I listened to the blue album in my life? 107. Hmm, no shit. Is that lame? Okay… invisibility.PE: As a representative of all the 20somethings in Waterloo, I’m curious to know where you see KW in 15 years?
KS: In 15 years I see K-W as being essentially the same. Maybe ALL businesses will have automatic doors. Actually, I see K-W as becoming even more of a full on arts community, I think it’s already on it’s way.PE: Shamelessly plug your band.
KS: I play in a band with four other awesome gents. Our name is Trap Tiger and we play oddly catchy indie-ish pop? We can’t agree on what we are but we jump, shout, clap, dance and sing our little hearts out. You can visit us online at myspace.com/traptiger or visit us in person at one of our shows. We’re at the Starlight on the 1st of October. Was that shameless enough?
A Discussion of my work in Echo Weekly Magazine
From Echo Weekly Magazine, Thursday October 9th, 2009
INDIE SEEN isn’t exclusive to musicians, as per some of our recent articles (i.e. “This Is Montreal”) and admist all of the awesome shows circulating in the city, we can’t forget the other indie artists who are out and about making a name for themselves. Take lead guitarists for indie band Trap Tiger, Kevin Suess. Although an extremely talented musician, he has taken the reigns to another part of his creative career – his artwork collection. “The Art of Kevin Suess”, is currently showcasing at Jane Bond. “My friend Lindsay set the whole thing up for me, which I appreciate immensely!” explains Suess. “She had been asking me for a few months but I never had anything new or anything that I was proud enough to show. Eventually it just so happened that I had new pieces and she was looking for an artist. It’s been a great experience; everyone at J.B. has been incredibly supportive of me and what I do.” And getting started in artwork as a hobby, Suess has certainly carried his love forward to a serious career opportunity. “I’ve got lots going on actually. Since I’ve finished school I’ve picked up a few design jobs but what I’m most excited about the handful of children’s books I’ve been working on. I’m also currently planning / working on a series of paintings and (hopefully enormous) sculptures based on the characters that dwell in the forests of my books. Aside from that, I’ve been working with a handful of local bands to put together album covers and other artwork. It’s going to be a busy few months,” says Suess. With being accredited to assisting Qatalyst Magazine to I.R.I.S. Entertainment, Suess has rendered himself a valuable force amongst the budding artists in the tri–cities. He’s quoted by Jane Bond as saying, “His most recent work explores absence, obscurity and memory loss through the use of found materials and multimedia, breathing new life into otherwise forgotten and abandoned wood and panel.” “These pieces are my attempt to highlight how items and people can slowly and uncontrollably fade from memory. Whether or not the viewer knows the purpose of their current existence, forgotten people and objects are once again brought to the forefront of our consciousness,” he explains. “Visually, the buildup of drips and debris is used to highlight the portraits as opposed to obscuring them in an attempt to reverse or at least stall the slow fade of memory.” The collection is not to be missed, a modern twist on the art of the human spirit – a take that only Suess can capture. “Art is most definitely a way of life. Each artist has a way of seeing, hearing and experiencing things that is different from any other artist or person. There may be a story behind a piece that we may never get to see, it all depends on what the artist wants us to know,” Suess says. So check out his work – now showing at Jane Bond, Waterloo. – Carrie Humphries
